By early 1951, a second pickup was added and to avoid confusion, Fender named the new "improved" model "Broadcaster", leaving the single pickup model to be known as the Esquire. Unfortunately, the Fred Gretsch Company already had a registered trademark on the name "Broadkaster" and Fender had to stop using the name after only a few months. Unwilling to stop shipping guitars while trying to come up with a new name, Broadcaster decals were cut leaving only the Fender logo.
